building conservation assessment

jonkermolen | St. Josephkerk

This project consisted in the analysis of the structural and materialistic damages of historical buildings. Based on the knowledge of historical materials and building methods, a proposal was made for an intervention aimed at solving the issues in the buildings.

The problems encountered in the Jonkermolen were mainly cracking, crypto-florescence of the salt crystals, sanding of the bedding mortar and, bulging, growth of mosses and pushing out of the brickwork.

The St. Josephkerk presented severe damage on the concrete exterior walls: the historical concrete had problems of soiling, staining, biological growths, crusts, cracking and spalling. One of the test carried out involved testing the carbonization process of the concrete with the use of a solution of phenolphthalein indicator.
